Bucking the prevailing southward migration of retirees and fowl, thoughtful new work by twelve contemporary artists wings north to Pittsfield in September.  Works on paper, canvas, installation, and video are presented.

Recent Pratt Institute MFA graduates are prominent. Shane McAdams' new series of untitled air-blown ink dances in blue whisps, ribbons, and spots within white canvas space.  Clare Grill paints boldly colored tethered tent images on white paper.  Ink and paint works focused on image, pattern, and form are presented by Ju Young Ban, Gary Cullen, Ryan Mrozowski, and David Pierce.  Elia Bettaglio uses pencil and explores the negative space environment that he manipulates with photographic cut-outs of David Lynch film characters.  Albert Sheldon's highly rendered paintings slightly warp familiar spaces.

Pittsfield artist, Eric Drury, transports his North Street studio a few blocks further north.  His studio installation of forms and models is a portal into his creative space.  The installation likewise offers Drury a portal into the gallery environment.

Janel Swangstu has introduced new form and color in her photograms, hinting at astronomy and geometry in her darkroom manipulations of light, liquid, and time.  Mark Keffer casts interesting geometry and imaginary world landscape in his paintings.

Brooklyn-based Chad Silver's video depicts a hyper-charged corporate brainstormer putting ink to paper in a delightful piece titled "Thoughts Have Wings."

"Northbound" will be exhibited Reykjavík in October.
