Gallery Boreas opens on June 6, with a solo exhibit of new work by Derek Zeitel. The exhibit consists of two sculptures and an installation. The title, “Hyggelig,” is a Danish word, which suggests a feeling of coziness and belonging with a certain space and time. The artist happened upon this word on a recent visit to Copenhagen.
The sculptures rest on low-lying platforms in the center of the gallery. “Dead Hippie” lights the space with a flickering bulb as it spills onto one platform. Nearby is a mass of swirling hair: Bodies at rest? An orgy? A gravesite?
Rays of light shoot from the rear wall of the gallery’s interior, over the sculptures and into the trees outdoors. This crystal and filament installation connects man-made and natural space and light.
